The Judy Chops bring a high-energy mix of swing, blues, rock, soul and Americana to the Pocahontas County Opera House.

Based in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, the six-piece band combines electric and hollow-body guitars, bass and drums with trumpet and baritone saxophone. That lineup gives the group plenty of room to move from roots rock and blues into swing and soul.

Their arrangements thrive on contrast. A song may begin with the bones of country or Americana before the horns push it toward soul, while another borrows the bounce of swing and feeds it through a rock-and-roll rhythm section.

The band has built its reputation around live performances where polished musicianship and a loose, celebratory atmosphere coexist easily. Their 2024 album, “The Good Days,” captures that wide-ranging sound, but The Judy Chops are especially at home in front of an audience.

Expect strong vocals, plenty of horns and a rhythm section that makes sitting still increasingly difficult.
