Documentary Double Feature: Wolf Spirit & Mother Daughter Earth

  • pocahontas county opera house (map)

The Pocahontas County Opera House will host a special documentary double feature on Sunday, Nov. 30, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., showcasing filmmaker Julia Huffman’s award-winning short films Wolf Spirit and Mother Daughter Earth. Admission is a suggested $10 donation at the door, and a reception with the filmmaker will follow the screenings.

Wolf Spirit continues the story Huffman began in her multi-award-winning Medicine of the Wolf, shifting the focus from policy debates to the deeper ecological and spiritual significance of wolves. Featuring rare and intimate footage from National Geographic photographer Jim Brandenburg, the short film explores the profound relationship between humans and wolves and challenges long-held myths surrounding one of the world’s most admired—and persecuted—animals.

Mother Daughter Earth turns the lens toward home. The short film offers an intimate portrait of Huffman’s relationship with her mother, Beth Little of Pocahontas County—an environmental activist, naturalist and longtime local resident. Set against the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the documentary reflects on family, aging and the powerful bond between people and place. The film premiered on West Virginia Public Broadcasting on Mother’s Day and was partially funded through a community-supported GoFundMe campaign.

Huffman, a graduate of Pocahontas County High School and Bethany College, has built an internationally recognized career telling stories at the intersection of nature, justice and human connection. Her work has been praised by Jane Goodall, Pulitzer Prize winner Louise Erdrich and musicians James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt and Graham Nash. She has collaborated with organizations such as the Sierra Club and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and her films and advocacy have been featured on NBC, PBS, ABC, National Geographic and the Huffington Post.

Join us for an afternoon of powerful filmmaking and conversation as we welcome Julia Huffman home to the Opera House.
