Summer Theatre Camp
July 29 - August 3
The Pocahontas County Opera House is pleased to offer a week-long Summer Theatre Camp. We have partnered with Missoula Children’s Theatre to bring to life a full theatrical production in a single week! Missoula Children’s Theatre is the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre program and has been touring extensively for more than 40 years, form Montana to Japan, and will visit nearly 1200 communities this year, with up to 44 teams of Tour Actor/Directors. A tour team will arrive in Marlinton with everything it takes to put on the play Pinocchio …except the cast!
Applications have been distributed through Pocahontas County Schools and may also be picked up and returned at the Marlinton Wellness Center or at The Opera House. To receive an application by email, send a message to Margaret Worth or call 304-799-6645.
On Monday, July 29, children will be cast in their parts. Among the many roles to be cast are Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket, a Blue Fairy, the Fact, and Cat, Candlewick and Crew, Urchins, School Kids, fellow Puppets and the Toys of Toyland. Children will rehearse this story of the wooden puppet who longed to become a real, live boy, throughout the week in a fun, safe, and supportive atmosphere. They will practice fundamental life skills like confidence, communication, self-discipline, cooperation, creativity, and dedication. Friday and Saturday they’ll shine on our very own Pocahontas County Opera House Stage!
The Opera House will also offer workshops to introduce children to acting, improve, voice, and movement, as well as learning about puppetry and the behind-the-scenes worlds of lighting, sound costumes, make-up, sets, and props. Pinocchio themed storytelling and craft projects will also be included. Lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided each day.
Children completing 1st through 8th grades are invited to apply! The registration fee is $25 for the first child and $15 for each sibling. Scholarships are available. Each child will receive a camp t-shirt and water bottle. Up to 60 children will be registered. Additional applicants will be waitlisted and contact should another child drop out before the week begins. The camp will run Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 29 through August 3. Two performances will be held: Friday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 3 at 2:00 p.m. Children will need to be at the theatre at 12:30 p.m. to prepare for the performance.
This camp is only possible because of the support of so many in our community! A group of amazing local volunteer thespians will be on hand to make this camp happen. Because of a generous gift in honor of Dick and Ruby Burns, we are able to bring Missoula Children’s Theatre, and with he support of many community businesses and organizations, we are able to provide a limited number of scholarships for children in need, as well as supplies, shacks and a pizza party between the Friday camp day and the Friday evening performance. Additional donations are welcome to help ensure this amazing experience is open to all our children. We hope to see your child this summer!
Children must attend from 9:30 to 4:30 all days of camp in order to participate. Parents/Guardians are responsible for getting their child to & from the Pocahontas County Opera House.
